Different Types of Automotive Lubricants
Automotive lubricants are mainly used for reducing friction and to gain fine and smooth functioning of a vehicle. Some of the products used as an automotive lubricants are gear oil, engine oil, greases, brake oil, coolants etc. Preferably biolubricants or synthetic based lubricants are more essential for automotive purposes.
Types of Automotive Lubricants:

• Oils: This is a general term used to cover all varieties of liquid lubricant, consist of synthetics, mineral oils, emulsions. The substance mixes, which include mineral oils, are mainly hydrocarbons, which contain carbon and hydrogen only. These are of three essential types. The major part in any lubricant oil is paraffin, in which the carbon particles are in straight or with expanded chains not rings. The second most basic types are naphthenes, in which a portion of the carbon atoms forms the shape of rings. In the third type, there is normally a little extent, generally two percent, of aromatics, in which carbon rings exhibit, however, the extent of hydrogen is decreased.

The use of greases is maintenance free, and it is semi-permanent lubricant which is generally used in gears. It is not useful as cooling agents like oils, but it consists of majorly three components; synthetic oil, additives and thickener. A study done on automotive lubricants market states that, around 99% of greases are made up of mineral oils. It is good and helpful for inclined/vertical shafts; major advantage of greases is water resistance and property for reducing oil vapor problems.
• Solid Lubricants: These types of lubricants are usually used for typical lubrication applications running under extreme conditions with high amount of friction ratio. Graphite is majorly known for solid lubricant to be used on a large scale. The bond within the layer is weak collaborate with weak forces.
• Biolubricant: These are primarily esters derived from plants and animals. This type uses the vegetable derived materials such as, palm oil, castor oil, sunflower seed oil and other tree sources.
