Rotavirus Vaccine Market Analysis, Segment, Trends and Forecasts, 2017-2021: QY Research Reports

How Effective is Rotavirus Vaccine?

Rotavirus is a virus which leads to severe diarrhea along with vomiting. This virus is known to affect mostly young children and babies. In fact the diarrhea can be so serious that it can result in extreme dehydration along with high fever. Way before rotavirus vaccine was ever developed; this disease was considered to be very common and grave for children in the United States. In fact statistics after the study on rotavirus vaccine market shows that almost every child in the United States did have rotavirus infection before they turned five years of age. Rotavirus gets channeled and transferred by the fecal-oral route, and the infection damages the cells which line the small intestine and eventually leads to gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu. In 1973, Ruth Bishop along with her colleagues discovered rotavirus with the help of electron micrograph images and is responsible for nearly one third of hospital care for severe diarrhea in children. However, its significance has in the past been undervalued in the public health community, especially in developing countries.

Symptoms pertaining to rotavirus:

·         Watery diarrhea
·         Fever
·         Stomach pain
·         Vomiting

Vomiting and diarrhea in severe cases might last up to three to eight days, during which children might refuse to eat or drink anything.

Vaccination for Rotavirus:

Rotavirus vaccines help in preventing almost 37 to 96 percent severe diarrhea in the developed world, and 15 to 34 percent of severe diarrhea in the developing world. These vaccines seem to reduce the death risk among children because of diarrhea. The rotavirus vaccines - precludes children from acquiring vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain from rotavirus, and safeguards children from rotavirus.

In the United States, there are two rotavirus vaccines that are licensed for vaccinating children – Rotarix and RotaTeq. Both these vaccines are administered orally and not injected. It has been suggested that rotavirus vaccines are very efficient when the first dose is given before a child is of 15 weeks, and rest of the dosages must be complete by 8 months.

·         Rotarix (RV1) is administered on a plan of two doses, at ages two months and four months.
·         RotaTeq (RV5) is administered on a plan of three doses at 2, 4 and 6 months of age respectively.

Lastly, rotavirus vaccines will not arrest vomiting and diarrhea which has been caused by other germs. Also, a virus called porcine circovirus can be determined in both the above mentioned vaccines. However, this virus does not infect people and there is no such established safety risk associated.
